Description
Nat Turner (1800–1831) was an enslaved Black American preacher from Southampton County, Virginia, whose deep religious convictions led him to believe he was chosen by God to free his people
On August 21, 1831, Turner and a small group of enslaved men began their uprising on the plantation of Joseph Travis, eliminating the Travis family as they slept.
The rebellion unfolded as follows:
- The group moved from plantation to plantation, eliminating white inhabitants and recruiting enslaved people.
- The force grew to around 75 participants.
- Approximately 55 white men, women, and children were eliminated.
- Turner intended to seize the county seat of Jerusalem (now Courtland) but was stopped by armed mobs.
The rebellion lasted less than 48 hours before being suppressed. After the uprising collapsed, Turner hid for six weeks in the woods before being captured on October 30, 1831. He was tried, convicted, and hanged on November 11, 1831, in Jerusalem, Virginia.
Nat Turner remains one of the most controversial and influential figures in American history because he was radical and was a symbol of Black resistance against slavery intrepid.
